             The History

           of

                The Tallas House & Gardens

The Tallas House was built in 1937 by World War I veteran Theron Watson Sr. and his wife, Lucille, a local schoolteacher.  They lived in the house until 1945, when it was sold to Judson, local businessman,  and Grace Hartley Germon. Grace was the renowned Atlanta Journal and Constitution Food Editor.  The Atlanta Journal and Constitution equipped The Tallas House kitchen with the state of the art equipment and appliances of the time.  It was customized with five ovens, bread warmers, automatic blenders and two refrigerators.  Grace was such an avid culinary artist that her kitchen was even equipped with butane in the event power was lost during World War II.   Grace created recipes and prepared fine delicacies in The Tallas House for many years.  In addition, she was the author of a very popular cookbook.  To bring her unique dishes to the world, the Atlanta Journal and Constitution wired her living and dining rooms to accommodate cameras and lights so her culinary creations could be photographed on site.

After retiring during the early 1980s, Grace sold her home to James and Martha Wood, niece of the original owner.  The Woods were Lithonia residents with 30 years of catering experience.  For many years, these caterers hosted private parties and delighted their patrons with wonderful foods created in The Tallas House kitchen.

After James and Martha Wood decided it was time to retire and move back to his hometown, a group of investors became the fortunate recipient of this jewel of a house in December 2002.  "Tallas" was name of one of the Investor's father and grandfather, Griffin Tallas Jr. and Sr.   Now, The Tallas House & Gardens has been transformed into an inviting environment for the celebration of special occasions.  Making every moment more memorable with its spacious and beautiful interior, charming patio, scenic grounds and secluded location, The Tallas House & Gardens offers privacy and elegance to patrons and their guests.
